What a veneer is
A veneer is a thin layer of material placed on the surface of a tooth. The veneer will not only improve the appearance of a tooth, it will protect your tooth from damage. Veneer is often used by dentists as a way to help patients who have problems with a stained or discolored tooth, worn tooth enamel, uneven tooth alignment, gaps between teeth, and chips or cracks.

When you need a veneer

Sometimes bonding a composite “white filling” is all that you need for minor problems such as a very small chip or crack . Veneers are best for severe cases of tooth color dullness, discoloration, spacing or uneven teeth, wear, chipping, and cracking.

Advantages of dental veneers

Veneers give you natural, healthy looking teeth because they are very thin and transmit light better than fillings. In addition to being esthetically pleasing, they also protect the surface of your tooth from further damage. Veneers do not require invasive tooth preparation as do dental crowns. In some cases, veneers may make a dental crown (caps) unnecessary.

What a veneer is made of

The two most common materials used to fabricate dental veneers are composite resin and porcelain. Resin veneers are thinner and require less removal of the tooth surface before placement, however, porcelain veneers resist stains better and well mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. They can be fabricated by a dental technician in a laboratory. Composite veneers can also be directly fabricated inside your mouth at the dental office. Porcelain veneers last longer but are more expensive than composite resin.

How long it will take

The dental veneer procedure can often be completed in two dental visits over a week period. The first is the examination stage; that means any oral health concerns will be examined before you and your dentist select the best veneer option and perform color matching. Once the examination process is completed and the customized plan designed, treatment begins.

The treatment procedure has two phases, 1) preparation, then 2) bonding. First, some of the outer enamel surface of your tooth may be removed (in an amount that is nearly equal to the thickness of the veneer to be added to the tooth surface), to make sure that the veneer can be bonded permanently in place later (a local anesthetic may need to numb the area during this process). Then a model or impression of your tooth will be made and taken to a dental technician who will fabricate your veneer. A few days later, your dentist will temporarily place your custom made veneer to check for fit and color. When you are satisfied with your new veneer, and no adjustments are needed, the veneer will be permanently bonded onto your tooth with a special adhesive.

How long a veneer will last

Dental veneers do not offer a permanent cosmetic solution and must be replaced eventually. However a veneer can last between 5 to 10 years depending on how expertly it has been placed and how well you take care of it.

A veneer does not require special care

There is no need for any special care of your veneer. Just continue to follow good oral hygiene practices by brushing and flossing as you normally would.

There is always an easy way to solve problems. In some cases, a veneer is not the only option. Better talk to your dentist and find out the best solution for you. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your oral health, you are always welcome to consult our experts at the Phuket Cosmetic Dental Clinic.
