Shake it up at Shakers

Grab a seat and take a Sip, At the latest place for Patong’s hip. Sweep away that summer heat With a shake or a smoothie, you’ll look real neat.

Located near the southern end of Rat-U-Thit 200 Pee Rd., Shakers is a small but sophisticated restaurant offering a range of salads, sandwiches, pasta, pizza, meat dishes and desserts, but what makes it so special are those smoothies and shakes – a fantastic treat in any weather but almost indispensable in the summer. Take the time to try one of these:

Mango Mania

What fruit could possibly represent the Tropics better than the mango? Available all year round this naturally sweet and refreshing fruit is one of Thailand’s most popular and mangoes are a good staple for a daily diet as they are high in fiber, but low in calories.

As it grows the mango has a green tough skin which slowly turns yellow with a beautiful red mottled effect as it ripens whilst the fragrant flesh becomes a brilliant golden orange and has a juicy and exotically sweet taste. Often eaten with Thai sticky rice and coconut cream, it can also be used to make a delicious shake; so sit down, take a break, and enjoy the fabulous taste of sunshine in the exotic flavours of the mango.

Watermelon Cooler

Welcome summer with watermelon when they are at their sweetest and best. It is not only a great thirst quencher on a hot summers day, but this delectable fruit may also help to fight the inflammations that contribute to conditions like asthma, atherosclerosis, diabetes, colon cancer, and arthritis. With a higher water content and lower calorie count, it still manages to give more nutrients per calorie than most other fruits, making it an outstandingly healthy drink or light snack.

You will probably have tried watermelon in a fruit salad, or even a watermelon sherbet, but how about watermelon chutney, or watermelon pie? Surprised at its diversity? Don’t be. At Shakers, you may well be satisfied with just a simple glass of frozen watermelon shake or an icy watermelon smoothie, but no other drink says “summer” quite like this subtly crunchy, thirst quenching fruit. Believe it and indulge yourself.

Sour-Sweet Blue Raspberry

Most berries are delightfully juicy, are either round or semi-oblong (strawberry exempt) and are brightly coloured to either attract or repel birds. In the latter regard, the raspberry is no exception and comes in red, dark purple and even yellow. With a smooth and fragile skin, the pigments that give raspberries their distinctive hues are also good for health, containing chemicals that may help to prevent some diseases. Raspberries have a flavour all of their own ranging from sweet and tangy to sour and acidic, but whatever the taste, they seem to be popular almost everywhere.

Raspberries can be used in a variety of appealing ways including being served fresh, mashed to make sundaes, put into jams, jellies, pies, and other desserts, but not forgetting of course, being turned into shakes and smoothies. The Shakers blue raspberry shake is addictive, but beware, if your next port of call requires a certain amount of style, you might fall a tad short because of your blue lips. Fear not however, it fades in time and I’m told a few stolen kisses can help, though who you kissed might not remain a secret.

Milky Banana

A firm favourite everywhere bananas are naturally native to the tropical region of Southeast Asia. Before it ripens, the flesh, a white to whitish-yellow colour, may be astringent, gummy with latex, and hard. But when properly ripe it becomes sort of slippery, soft, and mellow. The flavour is delightfully mild with a sweet but with an ever so slightly acidic taste. Of all fruits, the banana is probably the most nutritious, containing as it does, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. It is very popular with active people, such as athletes, providing a quick and easily digestible source of energy.

So now is the time to strip off those yellow jackets, get them naked, pop them into a blender, add some milk, break the ice to mix them up and join in an orgy of self-indulgence. Only ‘Shakers’ offers such abandoned depravity.
