Sri Panwa | January 2005

The festive season in Phuket turned out  to be a tragic time for many families affected by one of the worst natural disasters in South East Asia .  A tsunami ,  caused by a series of offshore earthquake of magnitude 9 , selectively affected the coastal areas of Phuket, Phangha, Krabi, Trang ,Ranong and Satun.  Some areas were hit harder than the others with a devastating number of casualties experienced in Khao Lak, a small coastal destination in Phangha , and also PP Island in Krabi.

Phuket's west coast sustained a  moderate number of casualties with Patong and Kamala beaches being among the most affected areas.  However, due to the survival of infrastructure, rescue efforts were able to reach the victims relatively quickly and the restoration has begun with high spirits to bring back those famous beaches.  The beaches are now open to the public again with minimal sign of damage aside from the total absence of beach umbrellas and chairs.  Mother- nature has in fact brought back those pristine beaches we had 30 years ago.

Sri Panwa was completely saved by natural protection.  The swell can be observed riding past Panwa bay from West to East. This phenomenon perhaps answers the question why the fisherman's village at Cape Panwa existed long before the West coast communities.  Those skilled seamen learnt to settle on the safer side of the island, which we simply followed.

As part of the larger community of greater Phuket, the people of Sri Panwa, share the grief and extend our deep condolences to those who lost their loved ones at sea.  We arranged a Buddhist and Muslim ceremonies in memories of those who lost their lives in the incident on Sunday, January 26, 2005.  May God take them to safer water.

The development of Pool villas draws the attention of many residents in Sri Panwa.  While the large residences serve the purpose of providing a second home, the smaller yet functional pool villas suit the requirement of small families who seek a stylish holiday retreat.  The show units can perhaps better describe its unique character of single pavilion sweet with private pool overlooking the awesome Panwa Bay .  The design is ahead of its kind in the market and well represented in the sought-after lifestyle of Andaman Living.

On the cliff overlooking the beach cove is our newly completed beach pool and pool terrace.  Nested amongst tropical trees which have been carefully preserved during construction, the wooden terrace gives a combined feeling of tree house and beach front terrace.  Located some 20 meters above the beach with wooden stairs and boardwalk leading down to the white sandy beach below, the emerald blue infinity-edge swimming pool equipped with Jacuzzi and underwater music (believed to be the first on the island) gives the feeling of swimming in the Andaman Sea. A lighthouse on Koh Tapao Noi and the deep sea channel with regular visiting boats of distinctive characters remind of the port ambience which only exists at Cape Panwa .

There was at least one celebration at Sri Panwa during late January.  Our residents of Villa 10, Lucinda Semark and Mark Singleton got married on Cape Panwa and had a lovely reception on their own pool deck.  The evening was glowing with a full moon over the ridge which shone on both bride and groom.  Congratulations and best wishes to both of them.

Another neighbor, Mr. Tam and his son had spent a good time during the King's Cup Regatta week in Phuket where they attended the Phuket International Boat Show as well as tried out the new mall, Central Festival.  The fishing trip of father and son did not report the catch, but we are certain that they had a real good time.

Our team at Sri Panwa tried something different from selling Property.  Several of them took turn crewing the Beneteau 39, "Gladys Guthenburg" skippered by our Structural Engineer, Radab Kanjanavanit in the Ocean Rover Class of the 18 th Phuket King's Cup Regatta.  The Boat sailed under Sri Panwa main sail and Beer Chang Spinneker and as the class implied, we just roamed around the racing course, finishing between third and forth but eventually losing the third place on handicap.

The high season in Phuket will last until late April.  Perhaps it is a good time to visit the island while many beaches are open and life in Phuket Town continues to give a new chapter of living in Phuket.  Tropical living is always diverse and life will be back to normal pretty soon. After the storm, there will always be sunshine and we have already seen this in Phuket.
