| Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova, the girlfriend of a British fashion photographer killed in the Boxing Day tsunami, returned to Thailand to thank doctors and nurses who helped her recover from her injuries.
Nemcova was pulled away from boyfriend Simon Atlee when the wave swept through the couple’s Phuket beach hut and she clung to a palm tree for nearly eight hours before being rescued. Atlee’s body was later found and identified in March.
Nemcova spent three weeks in hospital with pelvic injuries. She has since returned to work.
The 26-year-old model met the staff of Songkhla Nagarin Hospital in the city of Songkhla and others who gave her support during her treatment following the tsunami, which ravaged communities around the Indian Ocean and killed hundreds of thousands.
While being evacuated to the hospital, a fellow victim gave Nemcova a necklace with a Buddhist amulet.
“I have worn it till this day,” she said
