Thailand's image boosted during Miss Universe contest

Thailand's image as a top-class tourism destination will be broadcast around the world in a short documentary during this year's Miss Universe contest, the Deputy Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), Suraphon Svetasreni, has revealed.

Scheduled to take place from 13-31 May at the Impact Convention Centre in Muang Thong Thani of Nonthaburi Province on the outskirts of Bangkok, the Miss Universe contest will involve contestants from around the globe, and will be watched on millions of television screens.

Mr. Suraphon said that the TAT had liaised with the US-based organizers of the contest to gain a 9-12 minute publicity shot during the event, with a documentary which will feature locations including Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Krabi.

The film, which will feature the contestants, will show both major tourism attractions and restaurants and spas.

Mr. Suraphon expressed confidence that the publicity would help bolster Thailand's tourism industry, particularly in the six southern Andaman provinces affected by the December tsunami.

To date 40 of the Miss Universe contestants have arrived in Thailand, and all will be present on 13 May for the opening parade.
