| The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has unveiled its latest strategy to restore the confidence of Asian tourists in the country's six southern provinces affected by the December tsunami, announcing that it had invited monks from Japan and Taiwan to conduct religious ceremonies there.
Since the massive waves hit the Andaman region on 26 December, the countryr's tourist provinces of Phuket and Phang-nga have seen visitor numbers plummet, with many potential tourists put off by rumours of further tsunamis.
To help restore confidence, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has asked the TAT to invite monks and religious leaders from important tourism markets to conduct ceremonies in the affected provinces as part of an ongoing publicity campaign.
Mrs. Naphasorn Khachai, Assistant Director of the TAT's Southern Office Region 4, said today that the TAT had invited 26 monks and journalists from Japan and 20 from Taiwan to conduct ceremonies in Phuket and Phang-nga on 8-9 May.
