| A WHO conference on Health Aspects of the Tsunami
Disaster is scheduled to be held in Thailand's southern island resort of
Phuket this week, a provincial health official Dr. Wanchai Sattayawut told
TNA.
More than 500 academics and officials from the World Health Organisation
(WHO), other United Nation agencies and representatives from the private
sector will attend, as well representatives from health ministries and the
countries affected by December's tsunami.
The meeting aims to review the experience of health professions in response
to the tsunami disaster and post-tsunami rehabilitation.
WHO officials hope the evaluation will lead to new measures and procedures that could effectively reduce any previous obstacles and help improve the health systems at the international level.
Thailand's Health Minister Dr. Suchai Charoenrattanakun and the WHO
Director-General Dr. Jong Wook Lee will attend the opening ceremony.
An exhibition, "tsunami and heath-care services" will be on display for the
participants on 6 May.
Phuket has made great preparations for the participants, Dr. Wanchai told
TNA. It has also arranged visits to tsunami-affected areas including the
body identification centre in Phuket and the evacuation centre in Phangnga.
The meeting will be held between 4-6 May at thee Hilton Phuket Arcadia
Hotel.
